A firewall is a network security device that watches incoming and outgoing traffic and decides, according to a defined set of rules, which of it is allowed through. It can be hardware, software, or a combination of the two.

What a firewall actually does
A firewall sits between your trusted internal network and untrusted external networks such as the internet. It inspects everything passing through, blocks what is unsafe and lets legitimate traffic flow.
It filters known threats and blocks networks you have not defined. Which connections get rejected is up to the administrator — and firewalls like PONIVA Firewall also act on what they learn from the traffic they have already seen.
Performance matters as much as security
Throughput is the property that matters most in day-to-day use. A firewall that inspects traffic at the cost of slowing it down holds the whole organisation back, so the technology has to filter unwanted traffic while processing data quickly.
